Causes and Risk Factors
An eczema is a form of autoimmune disease. The underlying cause is still not fully understood. However, scientists believe that the condition is linked to a gene variation that affects the ability of the skin to retain moisture and protect the body from allergens, irritants, or bacteria. In several children, food allergies would play a part in the development of eczema. Possible risk factors for eczema include allergies, asthma, hay fever, a family history of eczema, and having other autoimmune diseases. [6]
