Autism Causes & Risk Factors

Pregnancy Complications

In addition to genetics, some problems during pregnancy would increase the risk of developing autism in babies. Abnormal bleeding or high blood pressure might affect how the fetus grows later in life. In addition, some complications, such as preterm birth or cesarean might bring the same effects. The more difficulties a mother has during delivery and pregnancy, the more serious the autism occurs in the children. In some extreme cases of preterm babies who are born before 26 weeks of gestation, the risk of developing autism is relatively high. [2]
