Acute Myelomonocytic Leukemia (AMML) – What to Know

Treatments for Weak and Older Patients

People with poor health or older patients might not be able to tolerate some treatments above for AMML. Therefore, they need alternatives to remove cancerous cells. In general, the elderly is usually given lower-intensity therapies. For instance, subcutaneous cytarabine can be injected under the skin. Hydroxycarbamide can be taken orally to prevent the division of cells and reduce the number of white blood cells. Subsequently, this can provide temporary effects on pain reduction. In some cases, azacytidine and other chemotherapy medications may be prescribed for frail or elderly patients. These drugs are effective in inducing remission and slowing down the progression of AMML. [9]
