Abnormal Posturing: Types, Causes, and Diagnosis

Opisthotonos Posturing

The last type of abnormal posturing is opisthotonos, which causes the body to stay in an unusual position. They tend to have rigid postures with a backward-thrown head and arching back. When these individuals lie on the back, only the heels and head’s back can touch the ground. This type of abnormal posturing is more common in children and newborn babies due to their less mature nervous systems. Other possible causes include seizures, tetanus, krabbe disease, brain tumor, serious electrolyte imbalance, a deficiency of growth hormone, subarachnoid hemorrhage, Arnold-Chiari syndrome, stiff person syndrome, a serious head injury, and more.
