Abnormal Posturing: Types, Causes, and Diagnosis

Decerebrate Posturing

Also known as extensor posturing, decerebrate posturing causes a backward tilt to the neck and head, pointed toes, and rigid limbs. It typically indicates the presence of damage in the brain stem or red nucleus. Depending on the cause, people with this type of abnormal posturing may have different postures over a period or with stimulation. People with decorticate posturing would start to show signs of decerebrate posturing or would go from one type to the other. Decerebrate posturing may affect one or both sides of the body. [3]
