6 Types of Seizures

Tonic-Clonic Seizure

A generalized tonic-clonic seizure, also known as a grand mal seizure, is the most noticeable type of seizure. People with this condition tend to have their body shaking, jerking, and stiffening. A loss of consciousness would also happen, making them lose control of the bowels or bladder. A generalized tonic-clonic seizure often lasts from 1 to 3 minutes with 5 different stages: contracting, extending, tremoring, contracting and relaxing, and ending with a postictal stage. When these symptoms last more than 5 minutes, it is important to seek immediate medical attention to prevent further complications, such as tongue biting or breathing issues. Some other possible symptoms include body aches, bad headaches, trouble speaking, vision problems, as well as drowsiness. [6]
