Autism is a broad term for a group of neurodevelopmental disorders. These conditions are characterized by issues with social interaction and communication. Typical symptoms include stereotyped, repetitive, or restricted patterns of behavior or interests. Even infants would be at risk when they are still very young. Below are some early signs of autism in babies that parents should know.
Mimic Behaviors
At around 6 months old, normal babies tend to imitate behaviors of their parents, such as gesturing or smiling. In those with autism, this might not happen or happen later. Instead of smiling, for instance, they would have a flat affect or have weird facial expressions. Around 9 months, normal children can imitate facial expressions and sounds. Autistic babies, on the other hand, cannot copy these behaviors.[1]
