Although chronic cough is one of the common hallmark symptoms of COPD, there are other individuals, who may be experiencing this symptom without being related to this disorder. Therefore, it’s important that other causes of a chronic cough are ruled out first.

Despite a persistent cough being an initial symptom of COPD, it remains highly overlooked, since it’s mostly attributed to allergies, smoking, or other environmental irritants.

People with COPD may experience a dry cough or a productive cough (with mucus). However, some types of COPD like chronic bronchitis may result in daily coughs accompanied by mucus production. At first, patients may cough intermittently, but as the condition progresses gradually, you may be faced with consistent coughs. [3]
