Complications of Primary Biliary Cholangitis
When primary biliary cholangitis progresses, it may lead to more serious complications. These include:
– Cirrhosis or liver scarring: This complication occurs in the late stage of the disease. It would affect liver function and eventually cause liver failure.
– Enlarged spleen may occur due to swelling of platelets and white blood cells.
– Enlarged veins can be caused by reduced blood flows through the portal vein. As a result, blood would accumulate in other areas and cause them to become enlarged.
– Bile duct stones and gallstones
– Portal hypertension
– Weak or brittle bones
– Liver cancer
– Reduced mental function
– High levels of cholesterol
– Vitamin deficiencies
– Higher risk of other medical conditions linked to the immune or metabolic system [4]
