Magnesium Citrate – Health Benefits & Risks

Possible Side Effects

Possible side effects of taking magnesium citrate include cramps, abdominal discomfort, gas, and nausea. They tend to be mild. However, if a bowel movement does not happen in 3 hours or if more serious signs occur, inform your doctor. More uncommon, severe adverse effects include confusion, mood changes, irregular heartbeat, rectal bleeding, bloody stools, severe diarrhea, muscle weakness, or drowsiness.

Magnesium citrate would reduce the effectiveness of some medications as well. These include ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin, minocycline, tetracycline, digoxin, and doxycycline. Inform your doctor about these drugs before taking the solution. [7]
