Japanese Hair Straightening versus Keratin Treatment
Japanese hair straightening typically makes your hair become shiny, smooth, and straight, which can be easy to blow-dry. These results are quite similar to these of a keratin treatment, another hair treatment. However, there is a main difference. Although both procedures smooth hair, a keratin treatment is less intense. It only reduces frizz temporarily by coating your hair instead of altering or breaking the bonds or reconfiguring the hair permanently to maximize straightness. This may leave some volume and curl in the hair, which tends to wash out gradually over time. On the other hand, results of Japanese hair straightening are permanent. [8]
Japanese Hair Straightening versus Hair Rebonding
Hair rebonding is another chemical straightening procedure. This option is quite similar to Japanese straightening in that it also breaks apart and restructures the bonds of our hair. However, it uses different chemicals for this purpose, including methanol, methylene glycol, aldehyde, and formaldehyde. Some studies have shown that formaldehyde is a carcinogen, meaning that it may lead to cancerous cells in some living tissues. The risk of breast cancer is also higher in those who got chemical straightening too often. [9]
