The superior rectus muscle
There are two noteworthy oblique extraocular muscles in the eyes acting in combination with other extraocular muscles to facilitate eye movement. The superior oblique muscle is one of them. With an explicit function of internal/lateral rotation and depression, the superior oblique muscle loops through a pully-like structure and has an attachment to the posterior of the eye. The distinctive path makes it possible for eyes to move down and out uniquely. [3]
The inferior rectus muscle
Inserted into the anterior, inferior surface of the eyes with a 6.5 mm distance from the limbus, the inferior rectus muscle has the primary function of depressing the eyes to a downward gaze and it is the only muscle to depress the pupil and cornea. The inferior rectus muscles can also pull eyeballs inward towards the nose (lateral rotation). [4]
