Dental Care: How to Keep Healthy Teeth and Gums

Avoid Sugary Foods and Drinks

Consuming too many sugary foods and drinks can impact oral health. Why is this? Your mouth is home to approximately 700 microbe species. Among these, some are beneficial while others are harmful. Bad bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans and Streptococcus sorbrinus feed on sugar. The more you eat sugary foods and drinks, the more acids are produced by these harmful bacteria. The repeated cycle of acid corrodes the protective layer of your teeth (enamel), causing cavities, tooth pain, and tooth loss at the end.

For this reason, it is better to cut down on sugar for healthy teeth and gums, and avoid foods like:

  • Syrup
  • Honey
  • Molasses
  • Amazake
  • Fructose
  • Evaporated cane juice
  • Fruit juice concentrate
  • Candies cookies & cakes [4]
