Can Birth Control Lead to PCOS?

What Should You Know About Post-Birth Control Syndrome?

Post-birth control syndrome may be the reason why many people think that taking birth control pills would lead to PCOS. It is a group of symptoms that typically occur in some women 4 to 6 months after they stop taking the medications. These include hair loss, acne, weight gain, menstrual changes, and fertility problems. People who come off other hormonal contraceptives, such as a ring, implant, or IUD, also report these problems. Birth control pills are not necessarily the cause of post-birth control syndrome. Instead, scientists believe that the body is adjusting to the change in hormonal levels. Most symptoms tend to resolve in several months. [4]
