Basic Types of Blood Test

Lipid Panel

The lipid panel is a blood test that checks the level of 2 kinds of cholesterol: “good” cholesterol or HDL (high-density lipoprotein) and “bad” cholesterol or LDL (low-density) lipoprotein. LDL is harmful because it would lead to the development of plaque in the arteries, thus increasing the risks of heart disease. HDL is good since it can remove some harmful substances from the blood and help your liver break down them into waste. It requires fasting in at least 8 hours before taking the test. The normal range of HDL is 40 to 60 mg/dL in men and 50 to 60 mg/dL in women. The normal range of LDL is 100 to 160 mg/dL in both genders. Keep in mind that normal levels would vary by age. [5]
