Basic Types of Blood Test

Comprehensive Metabolic Panel

A complete metabolic panel or CMP is comprised of all the measurements in a BMP plus additional substances and proteins associated with liver functions. These include bilirubin, aspartate aminotransferase or AST, alanine aminotransferase or ALT, alkaline phosphatase or ALP, total protein, and albumin.

The same results would be drawn from both BMP and CMP for the same components. In addition, abnormal levels would suggest some underlying conditions. For example, a high level of ALP might suggest the presence of gallstones, cirrhosis, hepatitis, or Paget’s disease, while a low level of this substance indicates malnourish, heart bone metabolism disorder, or mentzinc deficiency.
