X-Linked Hypophosphatemia (XLH) – What to Know

Signs and Symptoms of X-Linked Hypophosphatemia

The main signs of X-linked hypophosphatemia in many cases are the differences in the development of teeth and bone. Certain common symptoms may include softened bones (known as rickets), muscle pain, muscle weakness, bone pain, slower growth rate, shorter stature, abnormal gait, and spontaneous tooth abscesses. In addition, people with this condition may have impaired mobility, abnormal tooth pain or growth, as well as ligament and tendon calcification that causes joint pain. As a result of these problems, children with X-linked hypophosphatemia may not be able to join in physical activities, which leads to other mental issues.

It is also important to note the differences in symptoms between adults and children:

– Common symptoms of X-linked hypophosphatemia in adults: hearing loss, disability, calcified joints, bone fractures, and osteoarthritis

– Common symptoms of X-linked hypophosphatemia in children: craniosynostosis, rickets, slower or disproportionate growth, and delayed walking gait or motor development [2]
