What is Pseudogout?

Causes of Pseudogout

Pseudogout happens when calcium pyrophosphate crystals build up in the joint’s synovial fluid. Scientists have not fully understood the exact cause. However, the risk tends to increase with age. Up to half of the reported cases are in people over 85 years old. Pseudogout could usually run in families. That’s why many experts believe that this can be a genetic disease. In addition, other risk factors include a deficiency of magnesium, too high levels of calcium in the blood or hypercalcemia, too much iron in the blood, an overactive parathyroid gland or hyperparathyroidism, and an underactive thyroid or hypothyroidism.[2]
