What Causes Schizophrenia

Birth Complications

Complication before or during delivery can increase the risk of developing mental health issues, including schizophrenia. Some common birth complications include maternal obesity diagnosis during pregnancy, premature labor, asphyxia or oxygen deficiency during birth, infection during pregnancy, or low weight at birth. Due to the ethics in studying pregnant women, most studies only look at the association between schizophrenia and complications on animals. However, most scientists agree that the risk of complications is often higher in pregnant women with schizophrenia. It is still unknown whether kids are at an increased risk because of pregnancy complications, genetic factors, or both. [6]
