What Are Leukemia Relapses and Why Do They Happen?

Relapses in Different Types of Leukemia

The change of having a leukemia relapse may vary based on the form of leukemia you have.

Relapses in Acute Myeloid Leukemia

Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a form of leukemia that occurs in the myeloid stem cells of the white blood cells. It causes immature white blood cells to grow and multiply uncontrollably. Both adults and children can be affected by AML. This is the second-most common form of leukemia in children, after acute lymphocytic leukemia. Approximately 50 percent of people with AML will have a leukemia relapse, which may occur a few months or years after initial treatment. Most cases happen between 2 and 3 years of initial treatment.
