Umbilical Hernia – Symptoms and Causes

Discomfort or Pain

Unlike other kinds of hernias, an umbilical hernia is often painless. However, people with this condition would sometimes feel pain and discomfort at the site of the bulge. This symptom is more common in infants and young children. Adults might also feel this problem when the hernia grows in size. The pain tends to appear when the abdominal wall contracts and increases pressure on the contents inside the hernia. It can be worsened when you strain due to constipation or try to lift heavy items. In some rare cases, a strangulated umbilical hernia would cause a painful sensation that might require a medical emergency. [2]
