Tonsillitis: Symptoms, Causes & Treatments

Tonsillectomy

Tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure that involves removing the tonsils. This procedure is usually recommended if you develop chronic or recurrent tonsillitis, or if your tonsillitis causes complications, and your symptoms don’t improve.

Your doctor may recommend a tonsillectomy if you have developed tonsillitis or strep throat at least 5 to 7 times in the past year. The procedure will help stop the recurrence. The surgery may also help improve breathing or swallowing problems that may occur due to tonsillitis.

Studies show that doctors also recommend a tonsillectomy to reduce throat infections in children during the first year after surgery. However, children who underwent this procedure may grow up to become highly susceptible to respiratory and infectious diseases.

Studies show that people who undergo tonsillectomy are less likely to develop strep throat. In rare cases, the tonsils may grow back after removal. It usually takes about 1 to 2 weeks to fully recover after the procedure. It would help to contact your doctor to learn what to do and not do before and after you get a tonsillectomy.
