Tonsillitis: Symptoms, Causes & Treatments

Viral tonsillitis

Viruses are the most common cause of tonsillitis. Viruses that cause the common cold are mostly responsible for tonsillitis. However, other viruses can also cause it, such as:

  • Rhinovirus [2]
  • Epstein-Barr virus [3]
  • Hepatitis A [4]
  • HIV [5]

Epstein-Barr virus can cause both tonsillitis and mononucleosis. Therefore, people with mononucleosis may develop tonsillitis as a secondary infection.

Symptoms of viral tonsillitis usually involve stuffy or a coughy nose. Antibiotics are not effective in treating viral diseases, but you can take over-the-counter painkillers or stay hydrated to treat standard symptoms.
