Viral tonsillitis
Viruses are the most common cause of tonsillitis. Viruses that cause the common cold are mostly responsible for tonsillitis. However, other viruses can also cause it, such as:
Epstein-Barr virus can cause both tonsillitis and mononucleosis. Therefore, people with mononucleosis may develop tonsillitis as a secondary infection.
Symptoms of viral tonsillitis usually involve stuffy or a coughy nose. Antibiotics are not effective in treating viral diseases, but you can take over-the-counter painkillers or stay hydrated to treat standard symptoms.
