Tonsillitis: Symptoms, Causes & Treatments

Chronic tonsillitis

Chronic tonsillitis can also lead to tonsillitis stones, a condition where materials such as dead cells, food, and saliva accumulate in the crevices of your tonsils. Eventually, the debris may solidify to form small tones. These stones may resolve on their own, or your doctor may remove them.

In severe cases, your doctor may recommend a tonsillectomy to surgically remove your tonsils if you have chronic tonsillitis. Tonsillectomy may also be required to treat chronic tonsillitis.

Recurrent tonsillitis

Recurrent tonsillitis is a sore throat or tonsillitis that occurs at least 5 to 7 times in one year, occurs at least 5 times in each of the previous 2 years, and occurs at least three times in each of the last 3 years.
