Tonsillitis: Symptoms, Causes & Treatments

What are the types of tonsillitis?

Tonsillitis can occur in different ways. Let’s take a look at the types of tonsillitis:

Acute tonsillitis

Tonsillitis is more common in children than in adults. In fact, studies show that 1 in 5 children will get tonsillitis at least once.

If your tonsillitis symptoms last for 10 days or less, your doctor will consider it acute tonsillitis. If symptoms last for a longer period or if the condition reoccurs multiple times during the year, your doctor will consider it chronic or recurrent tonsillitis.

You can improve the symptoms of acute tonsillitis with home treatments. However, in some cases, your doctor may recommend other treatments, such as antibiotics.

Chronic tonsillitis symptoms usually last longer than acute tonsillitis. The following symptoms usually accompany acute tonsillitis:

  • Sore throat
  • Bad breath (halitosis)
  • Tender lymph nodes in the neck [1]
