Stye or Chalazia? Facts to Know

Stye versus Chalazia: Differences in Signs and Symptoms

Many people often mistake chalazia for styes since both conditions cause swollen and red lumps on the eyelid. However, there are certain differences between them. A chalazion typically has only one symptom, which is a harder lump than a stye. In some other cases, it would increase in size and lead to a blurry vision. On the other hand, typical signs of a stye include sensitivity to light, a scratchy sensation in the eye, a pimple-like look, pain in the affected area, the sensation of having something in the eye, crusty margin of the eyelid, and tearing. A bump caused by a stye typically disappears in 3 days, while chalazia might grow more slowly and develop over several months. [3]
