Shigellosis(Shigella) Fact Sheet

How Does Shigellosis Spread?

Shigella bacteria can spread from person to person through the oral route as well as indirect or direct contact with fecal matter. The risk is especially high when you do not wash your hands properly, especially after changing nappies or going to the toilet. Some kinds of sexual activities like anal sex or oral sex, may also allow the bacteria to be passed between people. Another way of spreading shigellosis is to consume water or food contaminated with the bacteria due to problems with the sewage system or poor hand hygiene. Flies may spread Shigella to uncovered food from human waste as well. You may have the bacteria in the feces for a few weeks without any symptoms, and still spread the infection to other people. [2]
