Pleural Effusion – Causes, Symptoms, and Treatments

Types of Pleural Effusions

Pleural effusions can be divided into several forms, which are different in causes and treatments. These include:

– Transudative pleural effusions: High blood pressure or a low count of blood protein would cause fluid to leak into the pleural space and lead to this form. Congestive heart failure is the most common cause.

– Exudative effusions: This form is caused by lung injury, tumors, inflammation, blocked blood vessels or lymph, fungal infections, pneumonia, and pulmonary embolisms.

– Uncomplicated versus complicated pleural effusions:

Complicated pleural effusions are characterized by fluids with noticeable inflammation or infection. This type needs immediate medical treatment like chest draining.

Complicated pleural effusions are characterized by fluid without symptoms of inflammation or infection. As a result, they are also less likely to trigger permanent lung issues.[2]
