Types of Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis)

Viral Conjunctivitis

Most cases of conjunctivitis are caused by a viral infection. Adenovirus is the main trigger, but other viruses like varicella-zoster or herpes simplex virus can be possible causes. It could occur through direct exposure to the sneezing or coughing of people with an infection in the upper respiratory tract. This type also happens when the virus spreads to your mucous membranes, which line the throat, nose, lungs, conjunctiva, and tear ducts. Since it is very contagious, one or both eyes can be affected.
