Patellar Fractures (Broken Kneecap) – Things You Need to Know

Clinically Relevant Anatomy

The patella is a triangular-shaped bone located on the anterior area of the knee, right at the distal part of the femur. It is the biggest sesamoid bone in the knee joint and body. As part of the quadriceps, lateralis and vastus medialis are responsible for controlling the patella’s movements. The extensor mechanism plays a main part in patella fractures. In general, the patella provides protection to the knee and connects other muscle groups. The patella’s undersides are covered with articular cartilage, a smooth substance that helps surrounding bones glide easily while you are moving the knee. [2]
