Treatment
Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis has eluded a definitive cure, and no medications have proven to slow down its progression if it should develop. Since it is a rare disease, it has become increasingly difficult to conduct large studies on the disease in order to get a cure. However, there are procedures and medications on the ground which have helped in discrete cases of the disease, although they don’t work for everyone.
• In some patients who have had a kidney transplant, symptoms of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis begin to improve if there is an improvement in renal function over time.
• In patients with advanced kidney disease, receiving hemodialysis immediately after exposure to gadolinium-containing contrast agents has proven to reduce the risk of developing NSF.
• The symptoms of joint contractures, which tend to spread and worsen, may be reduced by applying physical therapy to stretch affected joint areas.
• Skin thickening has been reduced in some patients after exposure to ultraviolet A radiation.
• Plasmapheresis has helped in several cases too. [6]
