Nasal Polyps: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatments & Prevention

Treatments of Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps could be treated through medication and surgery. When people have mild symptoms, it is suggested to start with drug treatments to shrink or eliminate nasal polyps. Corticosteroids are one of the most effective prescribed medicines for decreasing inflammation. Abbreviated as steroids, it is an artificial substance that could suppress multiple inflammatory genes and reduce the production of inflammatory chemicals. The common forms include nasal corticosteroids, oral corticosteroids, and injectable corticosteroids. Other medications to treat nasal polyps are Dupilumab (Dupixent) and aspirin desensitization.

When conservative treatment doesn’t work well on patients, otorhinolaryngologists would consider getting rid of nasal polyps with an endoscopic surgery, which involves the endoscope insertion from your nostrils into your sinus cavities.  Surgeons would use tiny instruments to remove your polyps and clean out other obstructions during the procedure. After the nasal polypectomy, rest well and rinse your nose gently with saline water to promote recovery. Some people may have surgery complications such as pain, nose bleeding, chronic nasal drainage, empty nose syndrome, etc. [4]
