Nasal Polyps: Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatments & Prevention

Prevention of Nasal Polyps

Nasal polyps could probably come back after treatments. Here are some measures you could take to reduce the chance of recurrence.

  • Keep in touch with your doctor.

The most imperative rule is to update your condition with your doctor periodically. Ask for medical advice immediately if the symptoms get worse.

  • Stay away from possible nasal irritants.

Inhaling airborne substances like dust, pollens, cigarette smoke, dander, and chemical fumes could irritate your sinuses and increase swelling. Therefore, stay away from possible nasal irritants and wear face masks when you go outside. You could also use a humidifier to moisten your nasal passage and reduce inflammation.

  • Nasal rinse (Neti pot)

Accumulated evidence shows that saline irrigation is helpful to treat nasal polyps. Firstly, fill a neti pot with sterilized saltwater. Stand next to a sink and tilt your head to one side. Secondly, squeeze the saline solution container and slowly pour the water into the upper nostrils. Keep in mind to breathe with your mouth during nasal irrigation. Thirdly, repeat it with another nostril. Once finished, gently wipe your nose and keep it clean. [5]
