Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis
Many people with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis may develop into secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, a progressive form of the condition. This transition typically occurs after 10 to 25 years after onset. It marks a change in disease biology when inflammation becomes neurodegeneration, which means nerve cells slowly stop working properly and die. Symptoms of secondary progressive multiple sclerosis are quite similar to those in relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, but they tend to increase or worsen slowly over time. However, people in this stage may still experience frequent episodes of relapses and remission. This gradual transition would make it more difficult to diagnose secondary progressive multiple sclerosis.[5]
