Misdiagnosis – Conditions that Mimic ADHD

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a condition that many doctors often misdiagnose for ADHD. Both disorders are usually difficult to differentiate since they share some common signs. These include impatience, talkativeness, restlessness, outbursts, and mood changes. ADHD can be mainly characterized by physical restlessness, impulsivity, distractibility, and inattention. Bipolar disorder may lead to more serious changes in behaviour, thinking, energy, or mood. While ADHD primarily affects behaviour and attention, bipolar disorder is a mood disorder.

There are some main differences between bipolar disorder and ADHD. However, they tend to be very subtle and would go unnoticed. Bipolar disorder tends to first occur in early adulthood or late adolescence, while ADHD is often first diagnosed in children. Symptoms of bipolar disorder may not appear in between episodes of depression or mania, while ADHD problems happen constantly. People with bipolar disorder often have conflicts with authority figures and have responses to disciplinary actions. People with ADHD would have trouble with overstimulated sensory. [2]
