Risk Factors for Lung Abscess
Major risk factors for the development of a lung abscess may include:
– Upper airway problems: oropharyngeal surgery or sinus infections
– Dental problems: gum disease, poor dental hygiene, dental decay
– Reduced muscle control: inability to cough or trouble swallowing
– Lower level of consciousness resulting in aspiration: mechanical ventilation, seizure disorders, general anesthesia, stroke, coma, or drug use
– Immune suppression: malnutrition, aging, sepsis, immunosuppressants, or long-term use of steroids
– Other disorders: muscle and joint infections, bronchial obstruction, gastroesophageal reflux disease, diabetes
Among these, excessive consumption of alcohol is the main risk factor for a lung abscess. [6]
