Lung Abscess: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, Treatment

Causes of Secondary Lung Abscess

When an infection spreads to your lungs from other parts of the body, it may lead to a secondary lung abscess. This would happen due to external or internal causes, such as:

– Septic emboli: An infection would spread to your lungs through the bloodstream due to IV medication abuse, an infected central catheter, an infected heart valve, or a part of thrombophlebitis

– Aspiration of an infected material from your upper airways and mouth

– Penetration: An infection would spread to your lungs from surrounding areas, such as a subphrenic abscess, a mediastinal infection, or an esophagus [5]
