Kidney Infection – Diagnosis & Treatment

DMSA Scintigraphy

A DMSA or dimercaptosuccinic acid scintigraphy involves the injection of radioactive material into your vein. This substance will eventually move along the body to your kidneys. During this procedure, special computers and cameras are used to produce pictures of the radioactive elements. Any areas with damages caused by an infection will be highlighted. More importantly, the results can indicate the level of intensity. As the injection is minor, anesthesia is not necessary. Overall, this is a safe diagnostic test for a kidney infection. [4]
