Excessive loss of water from failure to drink enough water

Asides losing water through the urinary tract, the skin, and bowel movement, not taking in enough water orally can also lead to low levels of body water which results in hypernatremia. This happens typically to elderly patients or the physically and mentally impaired ones who have failed to drink enough water or even perceive thirst. The presence of water is much needed in the body but at a required rate. When it gets too much, it causes other serious complications.
