How to Treat Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction

Arthroscopy

In arthroscopy, one or more small holes are made in the skin over the affected joint. After that, the surgeon will insert a cannula, a narrow tube, into the joint through the holes. An arthroscope will be then placed into the cannula. This is a tool with a camera and light to visualize the area. Through the cannula, the doctor can operate with small surgical tools. Compared to open surgery, arthroscopy is less invasive and quicker to recover, normally only a few days. This approach also allows for more complicated procedures, such as medication injection, joint reshaping, or scar tissue removal. [5]
