Flatfoot (Pes Planus) – Facts to Know

Causes

Excessive pronation of the feet is the most common cause of pes planus. Unlike usual pronation in which your feet evenly roll from the heel to toe, it happens when the arch descends inward and downward when you strike the feet on the ground. Due to this tendency, people with flat feet tend to put constant pressure on their knees, ankles, and feet because flat feet cannot absorb shock sufficiently. In addition, it might lead to the excessive rotation of the shinbone or tibia, which subsequently increases the risk of shin splints. [4]
