Diverticulitis – Symptoms & Causes

Diet

A diet that is low in fiber and high in animal fat would trigger diverticulitis. Many studies have shown that a lack of fiber in your daily meal would raise the risk of constipation, which increases pressure in the colon and facilitates the formation of pouches. When you cannot pass stools easily, abnormal distention in intestinal tissues, particularly in your sigmoid colon, would increase the risks of developing diverticulitis. However, there are actually many controversial views on the role of dietary fiber in diverticulitis. Some foods to avoid include fermented products, dairy foods, beans, garlic, onions, and some fruits like plums, pears, or apples. [8]
