Intravenous (IV) Fluids & Medications
In some cases, a lack of fluids in the body may be the cause of kidney failure, especially in acute cases. You may get intravenous (IV) fluids to treat this issue. The main goal is to rebalance the amount of blood fluids. On the other hand, having too much fluid may also trigger kidney failure. This would lead to swollen legs and arms. In these cases, diuretics can be recommended to help the body remove extra fluids. [5]
Many people with kidney failure cannot filter potassium from the blood properly. There are some medications to help control the level of this substance in the blood. Sodium, glucose, or calcium polystyrene sulfonate can prevent potassium from building up in the blood. In more serious cases, it would even lead to muscle weakness and irregular heartbeats. Your doctor may also suggest some medications to help restore levels of blood calcium. [6]
