Common Tick-Borne Diseases

Ehrlichiosis

Ehrlichiosis can be caused by three bacterial strains, including E. Muris eauclairensis, E. ewingii, and Ehrlichia chaffeensis. Some infected ticks like the blacklegged and lone star can spread these pathogens to humans. Typical symptoms include upset stomach, muscle aches, headache, chills, and fever. In most cases, doxycycline is the first line of treatment for both children and adults with ehrlichiosis. There is currently no vaccine to prevent the condition. To reduce the risk, you should avoid wooded or brushy areas, especially during warm months. [7]
