Common Tick-Borne Diseases

Heartland Virus Disease

Heartland virus disease is a common condition caused by an infected tick. Symptoms are quite similar to these of other tick-borne illnesses like anaplasmosis or ehrlichiosis. Most cases have joint or muscle pain, diarrhea, nausea, headache, reduce appetite, fatigue, and fever. In addition, people with this disease tend to have lower white blood cell and platelet counts than usual. The incubation period can vary, mostly within two weeks from the tick bite. Nearly all patients must be hospitalized. There are currently no medications or vaccines to treat or prevent this infection. [6]
