What is a Maculopapular Rash?

A maculopapular rash is a type of rash made of raised and flat skin lesions. The name is a combination of the words for flat skin lesions, “macule”, and small raised spots, “papule”. These lesions tend to have a red tone and may combine with each other. Papules can be merged into plaques, while macules that are larger than 1 cm are called patches. A maculopapular rash may be an indication of a few medical conditions, infections, or allergic reactions. A viral infection is the most common cause. It is important to visit your healthcare provider as soon as you notice signs as the rash might suggest a severe disease. [1]
