Catatonia – Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, Types, Treatment

Symptoms of Catatonia

Common symptoms of catatonia include:

– Echolalia: This means you only respond to conversations by repeating what you have heard

– Dehydration and malnourishment due to lack of drinking or eating

– Stay in a position for an extended period of time

– Stupor: You cannot speak or move and stare off into space

These signs are often seen in those with retarded catatonia. Other possible issues include grimacing, mutism, echopraxia, negativism, and catalepsy. Excited catatonia would cause abnormal and excessive movements. Malignant catatonia is characterized by sweating, rigidity, fever, and delirium. In more serious cases, heart rate, breathing rate, and blood pressure would fluctuate. It is important to seek medical attention immediately to prevent possible complications. [5]
