Catatonia – Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis, Types, Treatment

Causes of Catatonia

Certain medical conditions would cause catatonia. These include depressive disorders, bipolar disorders, psychotic disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, autoimmune issues, and folate deficiency. It can also be a rare side effect of several medications used for treating mental problems. Imaging studies have shown that brain abnormalities can increase the risk of chronic catatonia. Also, there is a link between this condition and a lack or excess of neurotransmitters in the brain. [3]
