Why Is My B12 Level High?

Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin with many important functions in the body, from brain health and nerve operation to red blood cell and DNA production. The recommended daily intake is around 2.4 mcg, but a bit higher for breastfeeding or pregnant women. In some cases, higher than this level would lead to some health issues. In this article, we’ll take a look at a few common causes of high B12 levels.

Diet

Vitamin B12 can be found in many animal products. Good sources include trout, clams, salmon, liver, beef, canned tuna, chicken breast, eggs, ham, low-fat milk, or low-fat yogurt. To stay healthy, you should consume these products in moderation in a balanced diet. Vitamin B12 is not naturally present in plant foods. Therefore, vegans or vegetarians need to obtain this nutrient through supplements and fortified products. These include tofu, nutritional yeast, spreads, margarine, breakfast cereals, or plant milk. However, when you consume these products too much, it would lead to high levels of vitamin B12 in the body. [1]
