Types of Catatonia
In general, catatonia can be classified into three main kinds: malignant, excited, and retarded.
Malignant catatonia is characterized by delirium. People with this type usually have a fever as well. Other symptoms include high blood pressure and a fast heartbeat.
Excited catatonia or hyperkinetic catatonia makes people feel agitated and restless. In some cases, they even have self-harming behaviors.
Retarded catatonia or akinetic catatonia is the most common type of catatonia. It is featured by slow movement. People with this condition would stare into a blank space and typically do not speak. [2]
